Microbiology
ECBC's microbiological expertise includes work with
human, animal and plant pathogens and serves as a focal point for the
Department of Defense's non-medical program on threat-pathogen agents.
Augmenting the Center's capabilities in this arena, the Center operates
its own high containment biological facility and can conduct investigations
requiring isolation, identification, preparation, characterization and
testing of highly pathogenic bacterial, viral and fungal microorganisms.
In addition, ECBC operates and maintains a Surface Spectroscopy and
Electron Microscopy Laboratory (known as MicroLand) for biological research
and forensics, specializing in morphological and compositional characterization,
surface analysis and fine particle technology. Here scientists have
the capability to analyze unknown items as well as determine the elements
of materials in bulk or in batches.
