Risk Management: Working Safely
ECBC's Risk Management is a one-stop source
for technical assistance within the defense research and development community.
Here, ECBC technicians work with a wide variety of hazardous materials
including unique military chemical agents, microbiologicals, biological
toxins, radionuclides, lasers and pyrotechnics or explosives. The office
provides safety, occupational health, surety and security consultative
services and aids in the development of test plans, risk assessments,
hazard analyses, equipment operating procedures and facility design specifications.
Staff also can provide expert advice on the safe handling, storage, decontamination
and disposal of highly toxic items in laboratory and test chamber operations.
Safety, Surety & Security Highlights
In the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, ECBC worked with the
U.S. Army's Program Manager for Chemical Demilitarization and the Soldier
and Biological Chemical Command to identify vulnerabilities associated
with storage of the U.S. chemical weapons stockpile. The Center quickly
drafted and implemented a plan designed to mitigate security risks and
eliminate the footprint of exposed chemical weapons. The Center also
provided the primary knowledge base for accelerated destruction of the
chemical stockpile devising a safe modified agent neutralization disposal
method.
